AVF-JOBST Grant Mission Statement:

The American Venous Forum (AVF) and the American Venous Forum Foundation (AVFF) seek to advance knowledge, excellence, and innovation in venous and lymphatic health through education, research, and public advocacy.  In 1995, the AVF, in collaboration with JOBST, initiated the JOBST Research Grant in Venous and Lymphatic Diseases. For more than 20 years, the research developed by grant recipients has helped advance the understanding and treatment of venous and lymphatic diseases.

The grant awards $90,000 over two years for original, basic or clinical research in venous or lymphatic disease.  The grant is open to residents, fellows in a training program, as well as physicians who have completed their training within the past five (5) years and are based within the United States.

The short-term goal of the award is to enhance and further the career opportunities of young physician scientists as well as develop novel research concepts to add to the knowledge of venous and lymphatic diseases. Thus, this grant mechanism will continue contributing to the career development of the applicants, becoming a cornerstone in physician-scientist career promoting innovative science and discovery.  Applications addressing “high impact” areas as well as applicants who demonstrate a strong interest in venous and lymphatic diseases will be given strong consideration.  The long-term goal of the award is to provide a foundation of research for developing compelling data and creating tools in support of a competitive proposal for future larger scale grants as well as advancing the current knowledge of venous and lymphatic disease.

  • Promote excellence in research in venous and lymphatic disease. In this regard, areas of emphasis will be suggested and posted during the requests for proposal every year.

AVF-JOBST Grant History:

Mr. Conrad Jobst dedicated his life and expertise to the development of gradient compression garments to better relieve the symptoms of venous disease.  Mr. Jobst suffered from venous insufficiency that prompted his development of an original line of elastic “stockings” that has now evolved into an extensive portfolio of advanced wound care and compression therapy products for the treatment of venous and lymphatic diseases. In 1995, in association with the American Venous Forum, JOBST initiated the AVF-JOBST Grant in Venous and Lymphatic Diseases to further Conrad’s legacy of innovation.  For more than 20 years, the research developed by grant recipients has helped advance the understanding and treatment of vein diseases.

AVF-JOBST Research Grant Funding

The AVF-JOBST Research Grant will be funded and administered by the AVF Foundation.  The Grant will provide $90,000 over two years chosen through a competitive and confidential peer-reviewed selection process.  The grant will provide funding for direct research-related costs and travel expenses to attend the annual AVF meeting to provide the annual progress report on the study.  The awardee will also be required to provide a budget report once every 6 months.  The grant award WILL NOT pay for indirect costs to the researcher’s university or facility.

Eligibility for the AVF-JOBST Research Grant

  • The AVF-JOBST Research Grant is intended for research in clinical, translational or basic sciences in venous and lymphatic disorders for AVF Members.
  • The award is intended for residents, fellows, and young faculty who are five years from the end of their vascular training.
  • The award may only be administered to an investigator and corresponding institution in the United States.
  • The award is designed to provide a foundation of research to build on future work and grants for mentored and independent research.
  • A no-cost extension will be permitted to allow for variability in research progression on a case by case basis only, upon written request by the applicant, and will require approval from the Research Committee, Research Council, and Board of Directors.
  • All residents and fellows are required to include a letter from the Program Director confirming a two-year commitment to the project and enough time dedicated to research during this period.
  • The applicant must attest, in their cover letter, that they are not currently excluded by the Office of the Inspector General from participation in Medicare, Medicaid, or other Federal health care programs. 
  • The awardee’s institution must provide a signed W-9 prior to the initial disbursement. Subsequent requests for disbursement after year one and after completion must be accompanied by a formal letter of request for funding, an itemized invoice correlating to the originally submitted budget, and update on the status of the research project. The Research Committee will review these requests prior to approving the disbursement.
  • The awardee is required to attend the AVF Annual Meeting to receive the award as well as the subsequent two Annual Meeting to provide a YEAR 1 preliminary report on the grant project and YEAR 2 final report on the grant project. This requirement is mandatory.

  • The science of compression therapy for chronic venous insufficiency.
  • Treatment for venous ulceration.
  • Pathophysiology of venous ulceration.
  • Diagnosis of lymphatic diseases.
  • The science of management of lymphatic disease.
  • Diagnosis and management of iliac vein compression.
  • Physiopathology of deep venous thrombosis.

Application Process

  • Applicants must submit a pdf of the completed Application via the online submission process.
  • The research project must include the objectives of the research and the methodology to be employed in the study.
  • A layman’s summary of the grant proposal should be included with the Application pdf.
  • The awardee is required to be a member or candidate member of the AVF.
  • The sponsor (mentor) of the project must be a member of AVF and he/she is required to submit a letter of support and verification of resources available to support the project.  In addition, the candidate must submit their curriculum vitae.
